long overdue update

wow, it’s been a while since I wrote anything here.  let’s see, where do I start..

Tioman trip was cool, except the parts where Kevin and I fell sick, leaving jet to do most of the heavy work (more on that once i get round to digging up my travel log of the trip).  After the trip I basically had 2 days in the country before I had to fly off to the US for a work trip.  Well more like going on a short course which happened to be at DISNEY LAND!! (yes how cool is that) and then an association’s convention which was really an excuse to eat and drink.. HAHAHA.. then came back and had like 2 weeks to pack and move! yes we  have moved in!  The renovation is not exactly100% done, but J wanted us to move in before the 7th lunar month so I moved in on 28th July (jet moved in on the 30th).

When I say the renovation is not completely done, I mean things like our additional kitchen table isn’t done yet, our add ons (side table, tv console for bedroom) we wanted aren’t done, but the house is livable.  We have the internet sorted out (long story, don’t ask) the lights are all at the height we want etc and my kitchen is fully functional! WOO.  the one last room to sort out is really the store room, which currently has the bedroom sink that came with the house.  We don’t want it and we’ve been asking my contractor to remove it but well he hasn’t.  So because of that we can’t get a storage rack in that room which means a lot of a spare / storage stuff are lying around.  After that, we will need to go get some paintings / posters framed (I have posters from the OATMEAL that are going on our room doors!), put up the wall decals and get some book shelves and we shld be good to go!

It is very odd to live full time with J.  But i can’t write about it now cause SOMEONE is peering over my shoulder and correcting my grammar.  GRAGHGDSFHOGI *cue angry face* Honestly, I think we are still adjusting to living with each other, even though we’ve been married for quite a while.  Especially the laziness surrounding the housework, the first two weeks were really exhausting!.  HEH.  Luckily, we have kinda found our own way about diving up the work, so far it seems to be working (Jet does everything! I just have to iron and apparently wash toilet.. ).

Think one of the hardest part for me was not talking to my mom everyday.  We make up for it by calling her every now and then (and she nags via text msging everyday!) and  it’s like she hasnt talked to anyone for a while so she talks nonstop when we meet up. HEH.  Of cos she also ninjas up to my place like a mystery elf delivering packages like food or things from her home every now and then too  and I try to meet her at least once a week.

Anyway going to watch some tv now, will post photos soon!

update on the house so far

we’ve had the keys to our place for just slightly over three months now, and if you take a look at our place now, it really looks like we just started our renovations. SIGH..  I guess it’s partly our own fault, first taking forever to check for defects, then the longest time to figure out what aircon we want and sort out the installation.  You see, you can’t start any renovation work until those two things are sorted out.  It also took us forever to figure out cabinet laminates and room colours so my poor contractor was actually chasing us to hurry up so he could start work.  It’s usually the client chasing the contractor on updates and to meet deadlines rather than the other way around.  Of course now, it’s all in his hands, and he’s taking a while.  Every time I ask him how long more, he says ‘two weeks’.  It’s been ‘two weeks’ for a while now.   But we’re not in a rush so, it’s okay.  The only thing is that now we’re going on our annual sail trip to tioman for 2.5 weeks in mid june and i may have to go on a biz trip almost immediately after that so we’d want to finish the thing before then.

We’ve also spent the last two months going around the island looking at various household stuff like

  • kitchen sinks,
  • taps (who knew there were so many types!! ack!),
  • lights (my neck was damn tired from look up all the time),
  • sofas (all the way to ulu land at sungei kadut!),
  • bed frames
  • coffee tables
  • tv consoles
  • dining tables
  • dish racks
  • electronics

yes, it’s been a tiring two months, and let’s not even go to the arguments we had over how big the damn fridge had to be (me: BIGGER IS BETTER, jet: NO COUNTER SPACE, rinse and repeat for one whole day).  Actually most of our conversations tended to be whether an item was too big or not.  things we have yet to buy / decide on

  • curtains vs blinds
  • tv
  • kettle
  • iron
  • ironing board
  • a decent mop (jet insisted on buying a regular mop, you know the dreadlocked looking one, and i don’t know how to use that.. i only know how to use the squeege sponge mop thing..)

there are actually a whole lot more but i think we’ll only by the tv next and just slowly see what we need.  I suspect we might some of these things as gifts (no that is not a hint, you don’t need to get us anything for the new house, but i think our family members may come with things and there are also the mom who have started buying all sorts of things so I want to see what they are first before we add more things).

i really am looking forward to moving in, this time my contractor has given us a date so it really is two weeks.. the final two weeks. hahahaha.  have decided today to use professional movers as I can’t be arsed to do the heavy lifting, plus i may have one or two bulky pieces of furniture to bring over so might as well just get them to move all my bajillion things.

can i borrow a cup of sugar?

thanks to a very active forum and neighbours (who used to go stalk the estate prior to it’s completion to update on the progress, some even sneaked into the unfinished units to take photos!!), our estate has a pretty active facebook page where people compare quotes, talk about their renovation ideas etc… this particular conversation made me smile, it’s funny how we’ve gone full circle, from living in a real community to hiding out in our own individual apts to now having a virtual community..

We have stuff!!!

So we continued on our hunt for the right furniture (without breaking the bank) and made our way to some ulu furniture place in yew tee… okay actually the place is at sungei kadut but there is a shuttle bua from yew tee station… after walking all three levels our hearts were still set on a sofa set, bed frame and most of all the dining table.  We picked the same exact colour for the sofa and you can see Jet is getting comfy on it already.  Oh and it comes with a matching Ottoman which can go into the games room or for the cats to sleep on

the bed frame, we chose a black on black print and asked them to make the pillow thing on the headboard one piece instead of two… </ image

forgot to snap a photo of the dining table so you will just have to rely on my dedcription for now… The table is a round, 4ft in diameter and made of some black powder coated glass so it has a matte finishing (won’t have to worry about fingerprint stains on the glass top… yay!).  We also got dining chairs since they had a deal to get them for cheap… I’m not that impressed with the chairs mainly cause they’re leather and will be gross to sit on on a hot day… when I realised this morning that I could always get chair covers to deal with it…

Furniture left to buy…
1. Coffee table
2. Tv console
3. Computer chairs (we saw some ergonomic chairs but they’re like $1.7k each!!!!)

Other improve things to sort out…
1. Air con (without this we can’t start the reno)
2. Lights
3. Wall colours
4. Cabinet layout (we’ve picked out the colours.. now we have to decide where do drawers go etc…)
5. Lights
6. Electronics / white goods…

House with a view

Living on the 24th floor means we have quite a nice view and even without fans, the house is quite airy… here’s the view from our living room

talking to ants?

a couple of nights ago, I was surfing some renovation forums and chanced upon a thread that was discussion people’s reno regrets.  Most of the thread was quite informative with people sharing design and product issues.. definitely a good read.. one poster that caught my attn mentioned that he regretted having counter tops with black spots as it is very hard to spot ants.. he then followed up with this..

U will find sometime, u are talking to the ants
